Q & A with IABC Member Julia Howard

What is your communications background?

I am currently a student taking courses in marketing, communications and business administration.

Where are you from?

St. John’s, NL.

What brought you to the communications field? What is your training/experience?

Past work experiences in community services at a local non-profit and as a nutritionist, as well as a love of writing, brought me into the field. I have a master’s degree in public health, a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and I’m a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. I have also worked as a research assistant in health services research. I am currently taking courses in marketing and communications at University of Toronto and pursuing a graduate diploma in business administration at MUN.

What do you like about being a communications or marketing professional?

Although I’m not working in the field currently, I have found that I enjoy the balance of teamwork, creativity and independence involved to produce a message that can help achieve very meaningful goals for individuals and organizations.

Tell us how you’ve benefited from your IABC membership.

I have learned about current issues and trends in the field, and the types of jobs and certifications that I can work towards, which has been extremely helpful.

If you’re comfortable speaking of this, where do you see your career going/what plans do you have for your career?

I would like to work in health communications.

Why have you joined the IABC NL Board and what are you most looking forward to?

I am most looking forward to making new connections. I have joined the board for this purpose as well as for professional development.
