Q&A with IABC Member Jackie O'Brien

Jackie O’Brien, GradDip. PR, BA
2020-2021 IABC NL Board

How long have you been an IABC member?
I joined IABC in 2016 years to volunteer as a board member.

What was your very first job?
Like so many others, my working career started with a paper route at the age of 12.

Jackie O'Brien

What energizes you?
Solving problems energizes me, which is why I love communications. I love to explore all sides of a situation in an effort to find the right solution. I also find meeting people and networking very energizing. Of course, the pandemic has made that difficult, but technology has helped!

What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?
All bad days can be solved with a little dance party in your living room - and my kids make great dance partners! I also find getting outside a great way to clear your head.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging, but have you found any silver linings over the last several months?
I have found many silver linings throughout the pandemic. The biggest one is I have spent more time on self-care after a rough start. I’m getting outside more, exercising, and eating better. Also, my kid is now a pro at covering coughs and sneezes!

What book are you currently reading?
Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

What is the best part of being an IABC member?
I love being a volunteer with IABC NL, as it has helped me understand the best way to get the most out of my membership. The online resources available at are phenomenal, but I love our local professional development and networking opportunities the most. It is great to meet other like-minded professionals and build lasting connections.
