How long have you been an IABC member?
I joined in 2006 when I was on a work term in Calgary.

What was your very first job?
Softball instructor at Waterford Valley. Dream summer job. So many great memories.

Karyn Whelan

What energizes you?
Good music in the car. Sunshine. A clean house.

What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?
I try to remind myself that tomorrow is a new day. It also makes a world of difference to take a step back - whether that’s getting out for a walk, having fun with the kids or even running out at lunch.   Making time to clear your head and reset. I just need to get better at making the time!

What’s the best advice you were ever given?
Try your hardest.

I also love this advice from my dad: “Mile by mile, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging, but have you found any silver linings over the last several months?
A slower pace in my personal life has been nice. More quiet time with my family. The pandemic also helps me find joy in the little things.

What book are you currently reading?
The Light in Hidden Places. I read before bed every night and this book keeps me up late. It’s so good! Hopeful and heartbreaking all at the same time.

What’s your favourite holiday tradition?
Gathering together for cooked dinner - most likely at my mom’s. I also love getting together as a family to enjoy a big breakfast at Easter and Christmas. So family + food it seems!

What is the best part of being an IABC member?
The people you meet. Becoming involved at the board level has also been a great experience. It provides opportunities to grow and stay connected with the changes in our industry.
